Uconn Law Certificate Programs

Uncategorized No Comments

Professor Joseph MacDougald [email protected] This certificate, offered jointly with UConn School of Business, is designed for professionals interested in careers in compliance, ethics, internal oversight, regulatory affairs and related fields. It is open to lawyers, UConn law students, and non-lawyers with at least a bachelor`s degree. All students who wish to pursue a dual degree program must be admitted separately to both study programs. Applicants may apply to both schools at the same time, or alternatively, students enrolled in the Faculty of Law or the Graduate Program in Public Health may apply for the other program during their first year of study. Applications for the co-op program must be submitted no later than the end of the first year at the Faculty of Law or the Graduate Public Health Program. The law courses admitted for the certificate are listed in the academic regulations. For law courses that are not on the list, students may contact the Program Director and the Vice-Dean, Academic Affairs to have them used in place of one of the listed courses. Students can also request permission to enroll in additional approved courses offered by the UConn School of Business in downtown Hartford. A degree from UConn Law School provides graduates with the knowledge, understanding, and skills to pursue a successful and meaningful legal career. Dual degrees enhance the prospects of students pursuing a legal career that overlaps with another profession, and certificates provide specialization in a chosen area of law. Yan Hong Director of Graduate Admissions 860-570-5284 [email protected] Interested students should submit an application to the Certificate in Law and Public Policy Academic Advisor, preferably before registration begins for their third semester, i.e. before the end of March of their first year. The application must consist of a short essay describing why the student is interested in public policy or non-profit management and describing a proposed program of study that meets the requirements of the certificate.

A recent transcript is also required. Students are strongly advised to consult with the academic advisor (and/or their PLR colleague) before planning their application. Twelve (12) credits are required to complete the certificate. There is a mandatory course: administrative law. If you have any questions about the certificate program, please contact Carrie Field, Director of Graduate and Exchange Programs, or Professor Travis Pantin, Director of the Insurance Law Center. Students interested in pursuing a career in compliance, ethics, internal oversight, regulatory affairs, and related fields should consider obtaining the Certificate of Compliance. Through this certificate, students gain a portfolio of skills at the intersection of law and management to lead effective compliance programs and build organizational cultures that foster ethical behavior and commitment to compliance. Young Women students should contact Associate Dean Richard Wilson. The LLM Specialization Certificate in Human Rights is a separate program administered by the Office of Graduate Programs. LLM students interested in U.S. law should visit the LLM certificate page. All students who wish to pursue a dual degree program must first be admitted separately to both study programs.

A dual degree application form, approved by each school, is also required. Students in the co-op program can obtain both degrees in four years, compared to five years if the two degrees were pursued separately. Applicants admitted to both schools in the same year usually complete their first year at law school. However, first-year students in the MPA program may cancel this procedure if they are admitted to the Faculty of Law for the following year. After the first year of law school, students typically spend one year full-time in graduate school. During the third and fourth years, students divide their time between the Faculty of Law and the Graduate School, depending on the choice of students and the availability of desired courses. In addition, all students must comply with the rules regarding credit load limitation. When credits from both programs are combined, full-time students may not exceed sixteen (16) credits and part-time students may not exceed twelve (12) credits per semester without the prior approval of the Assistant Dean. Students wishing to cross these boundaries must obtain permission from the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs of the Faculty of Law.

In no event will permission be granted to exceed these limits if, due to ABA standards, the study work at Law School would account for more than seventeen (17) of the total credits combined in a semester. Students who complete a certificate in tax studies as part of a Master of Laws program gain expertise in theory and practice, such as a tax clinic or articling placement. Students pursuing this certificate must complete LAW7661 – Federal Income Tax – and are strongly encouraged to do so during their first academic semester. Note: Your graduate program in human rights is different from the program you will submit for your elementary program. The MBA program is designed to be flexible to allow students to complete courses at the pace and format that best suits their needs. Students pursuing the dual degree program are expected to complete their first year of law school exclusively in law courses, but after that, they can take courses from both programs that best suit their schedules and requirements. Students in the Certificate Program in Tax Law participate in a supervised writing project, articling or clinic in the area of tax law. You can begin your federal income tax studies in the first year and continue your tax studies in a variety of courses during the last four semesters of law school. If you have any questions about the certificate program, please contact Professor Joseph MacDougald, Professor in Residence and Executive Director of the Center for Energy and Environmental Law. Professor Peter Siegelman [email protected] There is no application process for the Certificate in Intellectual Property Law, although students are encouraged to announce their intention to apply for the certificate at the beginning of their studies. In addition, students are not required to take their IP courses at any point in their law studies. All JD applicants for the Certificate in Intellectual Property must meet the following requirements: The Graduate Certificate in Human Rights, conducted in partnership with the UConn Institute of Human Rights and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, enables CLAS Young Women students and doctoral students to focus on the burgeoning interdisciplinary field of international human rights.
